Voice & civic participation

Age-appropriate expression, leadership and participation in school and community.

Literacy & life skills

Essay competitions, resilience, teamwork, social responsibility and practical learning.

Care & protection

A supportive space for vulnerable children, including children heading households and orphans.

Climate-smart STEM pathways

Kitchen garden demonstration projects that build girls’ confidence in sustainable agriculture.

Children informing policy

Their perspectives belong in public decisions.

Members take part in essay competitions that collect and document learners’ perspectives on contemporary issues, including Kenya’s ongoing policy development on eliminating child labour. Their insights can support meaningful, age-appropriate participation in public forums, including the draft policy process in which Angoro School participated.

Learning that grows

From a kitchen garden to a STEM pathway.

Small climate-smart kitchen garden demonstration sites become VOICE Club projects. Through practical, low-cost learning, young people, especially girls, build confidence in sustainable agriculture, teamwork, environmental awareness and industry-related STEM possibilities.

Livelihoods and Economic Strengthening

Pathways to Excellence, Professional Development, and Economic Agency (PEPEA)

PEPEA, meaning “fly high” in Kiswahili, navigates locally-led solutions to youth unemployment, underemployment and economic insecurity in Kisumu, building careers, skills, talent, enterprise and civic leadership.

Flagship innovation: the PEPEA Pathfinder. A tech-enabled mobile web tool that works on everyday phones. It turns each young person’s strengths, realities and choices into a personal 30, 60 and 90 day plan, matches them to verified opportunities as they open, and keeps a human PEPEA Fellow in the loop.

Grow and Glow: Nurturing Future Possibilities

As humanitarian needs grow and donor funding declines, THRIVE runs the Grow and Glow program, championing culinary social enterprising, and currently piloting a vibrant farm to fork social loop that generates local resources to sustain our work, and beyond reducing long-term dependence on external funding, promote sustainable agriculture-food sector in Kisumu, strengthen youth leadership, and create livelihoods. Through Grow and Glow, we engage young people at every step, from the skills, to the hardware, to the farm operations, to value addition, culinary, and everything in between, while exploring what makes agriculture attractive, accessible and economically meaningful to emerging young people, and what prevents them from seeing or accessing those opportunities.

How it may look like for a typical young person's journey

A young person can identify an actual hotel demand for indigenous vegetables, learn what specifications buyers need, work with producers, understand aggregation and quality, help solve the supply gap, and document the experience in their portfolio.

Along the way they gain market intelligence, communication, problem solving, enterprise exposure, agricultural knowledge and professional experience.
